There was a flood of Black Girl Magic at the 10th Annual Black Women In Hollywood event, which aired tonight at 10pm on OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network). Although it was only an hour long, it was packed with so much love and inspiration that is bound to set you off on a good work week.
This year’s nominees were Yara Shahidi (Generation Next Award), Janelle Monae (Breakthrough Award), Aja Naomi King (Lincoln Shining Star Award), and Issa Rae (Vanguard Award).
All nominees gave amazing speeches and messages on how they first couldn’t believe that THEY could be awarded, but soon came into their greatness; and how they were honored to be in the presence of the women that came before them.
But the message that started the tears was Aja Naomi King when she stated, “In order for me to strive…I have to stop believing the root of my talent is the tree growing in someone else’s yard”.
Janelle Monae also made a powerful statement when she said, “the moment we realize we are stronger together, that’s when the change will happen”.
Its safe to say that this night was filled with magic and love. Congratulations again ladies. Be sure to keep “doing the magic thing that we black women do!” – Issa Rae
